OXFORD, Ohio – Officials at Miami University are seeking changes in polices and standards of Greek organizations after two sorority formals resulted in the destruction of two venues.
The Miami University chapter of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Woman has been suspended for a year as a result of unruly behavior during the organization’s spring formal.
In a letter to the university, Lyndsay Rapier-Phipps, owner of Lake Lyndsay Lodge, complained about damage and behavior that included guests urinating in sinks, men scrambling over the bar for drinks and couples caught having intercourse, reports the Associated Press. The lodge owner also said she found a pile of human feces outside the lodge.
Meanwhile, Alpha Xi Delta is facing a two-year suspension for its March 26 formal at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Center official said partygoers engaged in excessive drinking and trashing of the dance floor and bathrooms. Additionally, one official said she caught one male guest attempting to urinate on a 19th century slave pen exhibit.
Both organizations have been placed on probation by their national leadership. However, Alpha Xi Delta is appealing the university’s planned suspension.
Miami University President David Hodge expressed his embarrassment over both incidents. In a statement, Hodge said the university plans to “significantly update requirements for Greek events and disciplinary procedures for the Greek community.”
This could include included increasing sanctions for wayward sorority and fraternity behavior.
