2 Florida Fraternity Brothers Plead No Contest to 2006 Hazing Gone-Wrong

Published: February 1, 2009

Two former Florida A&M University fraternity brothers have pleaded no contest to violently hazing a pledge in 2006. The plea will help Michael Morton and Jason Harris avoid a third trial in the case.

Morton and Harris were convicted of beating a Kappa Alpha Psi pledge more than two years ago in the first test of Florida’s felony hazing statue; however, an appellate court reversed the convictions in August 2008.

The victim was beaten with wooden canes and suffered a ruptured eardrum and severe bruising to his buttocks. Morton and Harris served 614 days of their two-year jail sentence. With the reverse by the courts, both men will be cleared of the felony convictions because their sentences do not include probation.
