MONTREAL – At least one gunman opened fire inside a college in downtown Montreal Sept. 13, killing one woman. Nineteen others are reported to have been injured.
The shooting started during lunch at the Dawson College cafeteria, and witnesses say a tall, slender man with a Mohawk haircut who was wearing a black trench coat entered the school with a large gun. The suspect then began shooting 20 to 30 rounds, causing students to flee in terror and take shelter in nearby apartment buildings.
The unidentified assailant was later shot and killed by police, but there is still confusion as to the exact number of gunmen. Some believe there were three shooters. Police cordoned off the area immediately around the college, and the school was evacuated.
Approximately 11 of the victims were hospitalized for gunshot wounds, with one fatality and seven being in critical condition.
Dawson College has a population of approximately 10,000 students between the ages of 16 and 19. The Sept. 13 incident is the worst shooting since the 1989 massacre at the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal where a gunman killed 14 women before taking his own life.
