NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Two men have established the New Britain High School (NBHS) Parents for Security group, which aims to increase security on campus.
One founder, James Weatherby, is the uncle of a 16-year-old male student who was recently stabbed. The other founder, Rev. Alfred Smith, has children attending NBHS and unsuccessfully lobbied the school board for the installation of fixed metal detectors.
The goal of the new group is to have parents and concerned citizens talk about the problems and research solutions.
In October, the school board approved the purchase of six handheld metal detectors, but the district’s superintendent ruled out fixed walk-through metal detectors, saying they are too expensive. Two additional security guards have also been hired.
