2 Charged in Toronto Maternity Ward Kidnapping Attempt

TORONTO – Two Toronto women have been charged with the attempted kidnapping of a baby from Humber River Regional Hospital April 29.

Police say Amanda Sukhdeo, 18, and Giovana Saladino, 19, entered the room of two mothers who had just delivered. The suspects claimed to be volunteers who provide breastfeeding lessons, but the mothers did not accept their offer. Sukhdeo and Saladino then walked to another area and picked up a newborn who was sleeping. Before they left, however, they returned the child after nurses were alerted.

Video footage of the event helped hospital security identify one of the suspects.
