FAIRLESS HILLS, Pa. – An out-of-control school bus hit several students Jan. 12 as they were leaving Pennsbury High School. In total, 17 children were sent to the hospital.
According to the school’s principal, the vehicle experienced mechanical difficulties that affected the steering and caused it to jump a curb onto the sidewalk, hitting the students and a retaining wall.
A witness said the bus driver turned the bus off and put it into gear to try to stop it, but was unable to come to a stop for about a half a mile. The witness said a security officer warned students to get out of the way by driving alongside the bus. One boy evaded serious injury by jumping underneath the bus and lying flat as the vehicle passed over him.
In all, 14 students on the ground and three students on the bus were injured. A 17-year-old girl remains in critical condition at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
