15 Arrested at UMass Amherst Following Red Sox Victory

AMHERST, Mass. — Police arrested 15 people gathered on the University of Massachusetts campus Wednesday following the Boston Red Sox 2013 World Series victory against the St. Louis Cardinals.

In an effort to prevent violent outbreaks that have plagued the university in the past from occurring, UMass Amherst officials organized an event for students to watch the game in a fun and safe manner. An estimated 3,000 students gathered in the in the UMass Amherst’s Southwest residential area to celebrated the Red Sox’s third World Series title, WGGB.com reports.

Around 11:30 p.m., brawls broke out on campus where students overturned trash cans and damaged a large television screen. The clashes lasted less than 25 minutes and the concourse was cleared around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, MassLive.com reports.
