13 Children Run Down by SUV Outside California Middle School

Published: May 2, 2007

BELMONT, Calif. – A group of middle school students were run down by an SUV that jumped a curb outside Ralston Middle School May 2.

Thirteen children and the driver of the SUV were sent to local hospitals to treat injuries ranging from broken bones to internal wounds. According to an Associated Press report, three of the teenagers were still in intensive care as of May 3.

According to police, parents and school staff used a jack and their collective strength to lift the 2004 Honda Pilot off several children trapped underneath. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. when the school let out early for standardized testing.

It is still unknown who the driver was and the exact circumstances of the vehicular mishap. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, the SUV was registered to Mauro H. Yan and Lorenza Y. Yan of Redwood Shores, Calif. A woman claiming to be the wife of Mauro Yan told the San Francisco Chronicle her 70-year-old husband was driving and he thought the vehicle’s brakes had failed. Investigators did note the absence of skid marks at the scene, possibly indicating brakes were not applied before the collision.
