In August 2013, UC Santa Cruz Police Officers Mike Kimura and Steve Garcia responded to a suicide attempt at a footbridge on campus. A man was standing on a lower railing with a rope tied around his neck.
As the officers tried to talk with the man, a former UC student, he threw them a backpack containing a suicide note. The man also told the officers he’d taken Tylenol PM and alcohol.
After ten minutes, the officers convinced the man to climb back onto the bridge and a crisis was averted.
