1 in 6 Coeds Experience Violence at College

TORONTO

A significant portion of university students have experienced either physical or emotional violence in the past six months, according to a study just published in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

The Associated Press reports that the rate of violence experienced by male and female students is similar: 17 percent and 16 percent respectively.

The survey was conducted on students who entered health clinics at the University of Washington, three campuses of the University of Wisconsin and the University of British Columbia. Nearly 15 percent of females and 9 percent of males reported they had been victims of emotional violence, while 3 percent of women and 9 percent of men said they had experienced physical violence in the past six months.

Also, there is a correlation between alcohol and violence. A third of the female victims who experienced violence did so when they were drinking, while almost two-thirds of the males had been drinking when they experienced some sort of violence.
