Swedesboro-Woolwich School District (N.J.)
The Swedesboro-Woolwich School District’s computer network was infected with ransomware on March 19, and officials began operating “as if it’s about 1981 again,” according to Superintendent Terry Van Zoeren.
The district’s IT department and employees from the Educational Information Resource Center are working to restore the system. Woolwich Township Police, the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crimes Unit, state police, the FBI and Homeland Security are investigating.
The hackers are demanding $124,000, or 500 bitcoins, to restore the system. The network’s email communications and online resources are down, and the scheduled PARCC exam, which is taken entirely online, has been postponed.
Officials are still working to restore its servers, encrypted files, email addresses and other systems, according to a post on the district’s website.
