Bakersfield School District Enhances Video Surveillance Storage Solution

The district plans to revamp its video surveillance system with AssuredSAN Pro 5000 storage arrays from Dot Hill Storage.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Bakersfield School District is overhauling its district-wide video surveillance system with AssuredSAN Pro 5000 storage arrays from Dot Hill Storage, enabling faster video access, near-real-time video conversion, reduced storage costs and more efficient archiving.

“We needed a modern storage array with outstanding performance to replace the aging system we had that was ill-equipped to keep up with demands,” said Jonathan Foth, network systems engineer for the Bakersfield School District, in a prepared statement. “The system needed to handle fast transaction workloads consistently and also provide cost-effective archival storage for video files.”

The district’s IP-based video surveillance system collects feeds from 2,000 cameras across the 158-square-mile district, which serves more than 28,000 junior high, middle and elementary school students on 43 campuses and two administration sites.

Video is captured in various native formats from individual cameras; the AssuredSAN Pro 5000 storage arrays then convert all the footage to H.264 format, resulting in a 35% reduction in required storage space, according to the company. Other benefits include reduced rack space, reduced power requirements, ease of use and lower rates of storage capacity expansion.
