RANDOLPH CENTER, Vt., Vermont Technical College officials admitted Oct. 12 that they had mistakenly posted the social security numbers of 1,100 students on a public Web site for more than 18 months.
“We have taken swift steps to secure the information and to remove the data from the Vermont Tech server and from other sources,” Vermont Technical President Allan Rodgers said in an E-mail sent to students and alumni.
The information, which also included student names, addresses, SAT scores and ethnicities, was publicly posted in January 2004 when a college employee tried to direct it to a secure computer drive but instead sent it to the public Web site.
Officials said there was no indication the information had been stolen or used inappropriately. The error was uncovered by a former student who typed in his own name on a search engine.
