False Reports of Crime Increasing at Colleges

Published: April 14, 2008

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – According to the Charlotte Observer, media attention and the recent deployment of mass notification systems at colleges and universities may be responsible for the increased false reports of crime that have been occurring nationwide on higher education campuses since the Virginia Tech tragedy.

Some individuals make false crime claims to get attention, feel powerful or mete out “punishment” for a perceived wrong. These false reports could lead to a cry-wolf scenario where campus constituents might not pay attention to a real warning, believing it to be just another prank or false alarm.
