GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Officials at the University of Florida (UF) are conducting an investigation to determine a leak of confidential information about a controversial admissions decision. The investigation will include looking through faculty and student E-mail.
While faculty E-mails are considered public records in Florida, student E-mails, just like student records, are protected under federal law. However, because of the circumstances, officials will be allowed to look through student E-mail.
The university’s Privacy Office is also speaking to members of the Medical Selection Committee to discover the leak.
The investigation comes on the heels of stories run by The Gainesville Sun in April. According to the publication, a student, Benjamin Mendelsohn, whose father is a major Republican fundraiser, was accepted into the medical program despite having never taken the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).
