STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – When the 2008-2009 school year begins at Penn State University, students will be required to pay a new fee for campus improvements, and freshman will have to take a mandatory course about high-risk drinking.
On May 16, trustees at the university voted to permit administrators to implement the new fee. During the 2008-2009 school year, students will pay $100. The following academic school year, the fee will be doubled. The money will go toward nonacademic, recreational space, according to administrators.
Additionally, freshman will take a course called AlcoholEdu for College to prevent alcohol abuse. The university will receive $245,000 from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation for implementing the program.
