Los Angeles County health officials are in hot water after it was discovered two public hospitals hired the same convicted rapist.
Gariner Beasley, 48, is a former police officer who was found guilty of raping a woman while on duty. He was fired last summer from the former Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Multi-Service Ambulatory Care Center when it was determined he was among the 11 percent of the hospital’s employees who had criminal records.
Despite this, he was hired by Mediscan Staffing Services and assigned to the Edward R. Roybal Comprehensive Health Center in December. According to NBC Los Angeles, he worked there for 15-18 days before his criminal past was discovered. The county’s chief executive said a Roybal supervisor did not conduct a background check of Beasley. A Mediscan spokesperson said Beasley passed all of their required background checks.
County officials are in the process of determining if the unnamed supervisor should be fired. He is currently on a paid leave of absence. As a result of the scandal, Mediscan employees are not being accepted by the county for employment.
