Kroll Fraud Solutions released its 2011 Data Security Forecast: Top Ten Trends for the Year Ahead, a list of possible security trends that businesses may encounter in the new year. By taking these into consideration, businesses can better prepare for changing security risks.
According to the report, there will be increased instances of reported, small scale breaches and low-tech theft. Lost devices – such as Smartphones, netbooks and laptops – will account for most data theft. Other trends include:
- Data minimization will be considered essential to increasing data security
- Increased collaboration and openness will make data more vulnerable
- Organizations will implement social networking policies
- Data encryption will be seen as a way to achieve compliance, but does not ensure data security
- Third parties will face more stringent breach notification requirements
- Privacy awareness training will increase in popularity
