Married UNC Employees Investigated for Child Sex Exploitation

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A couple employed at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill campus are being investigated by authorities for possibly engaging in sexual activity with minors.

The university’s IT manager Charles Hitlin, 42, was arrested on Nov. 8, after police issued a warrant to search his office computer to look for files portraying sexual conduct with individuals as young as 12 years old, reports The Daily Tar Heel. The Morrisville Police Department (MPD) alerted UNC officials about the possible sexual misconduct after Detective Mike Deaton, who works with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, had several undercover interactions on the Internet Web site chat.mother.com with an individual, claiming to be female, ABC 11 reports.

The person stated that sometimes neighborhood children would come over to her home to have sex and that the individual’s husband liked to watch and take pictures. The person also stated that she worked as a graduate student counselor and her husband was an IT manager at UNC. Police have identified the woman as Hitlin’s wife, Amy.

Charles Hitlin’s IP address for his office computer was identified in the chat rooms, which are used to share child pornography. He was charged with felony possession of a firearm after police discovered a 9 mm pistol, ammunition and a Gerber knife in his office.

Police are currently seeking a search warrant for Amy Hitlin’s office. Currently, Amy Hitlin, 44, has not been charged.
