Now more than ever the digital and social media world has flowed into the classroom and school environment. This changing landscape has had positives for learning but has also had a multitude of negative implications on a school’s culture and climate.

The use of social media outside the classroom undoubtedly follows our students into the classroom and, as frontline professionals, it is key to maintain periodic and relevant education of the evolving trends online. It is also important to maintain baseline levels of knowledge in relation to how technology and social media are currently being used by students. Best practices and current policies from the field will be shared including staff’s professional and personal use of social media as well as guidelines around interacting with students online.

Nick Chernoff

Safer Schools Together (SST)

Nick Chernoff has been involved with school safety for over a decade, spending the first half as a Safe School Liaison for one of the West Coast’s largest districts. During this time, he also worked as an outreach worker for youth at risk of gang involvement through the school district’s Wrap Around program. Nick has been a member of the Canadian Forces for over six years in the Infantry and currently works closely with various Military Intelligence Units.  As a member of the Safer Schools Together team, Nick specializes in Social Media Awareness and Digital Threat Assessment. In his current role as a Lead Threat Analyst, he collects social media data that is used to assist schools across North America in addressing worrisome and threat-related behaviors. Nick provides presentations and workshops to students, parents, educators, and law enforcement on social media awareness, as well as personal and public online safety.
