Here’s What You Missed at Campus Safety Conference West

The 2019 Campus Safety Conferences kicked off in Las Vegas last week, bringing together more than 400 people, including attendees, exhibitors, speakers and press.

The three-day event, which you can catch a glimpse of here, provided opportunities for education, networking and acknowledging the work of those dedicated to safety and security in K-12, higher-ed and healthcare.

The 2019 Campus Safety Directors of the Year – Ronald Hurley, James Johnson, Joseph Markam and Mark Reed — were announced. The four winners and 23 other finalists were brought up on stage to be recognized.

Opening keynote speaker, Chief of Police Michelle Freeman for the City of Las Vegas Department of Public Safety, discussed the importance of taking care of yourself, staff and community during the recovery period following a tragic event.

Attendees also had the opportunity to sit in on two special panels of experts in the K-12 and higher-ed fields on emergency preparedness. The higher-ed panel, compiled of administrators, security personnel and a college student, came together to discuss matters they are facing on their campuses, from student homelessness to mental health.

The K-12 panel included members from the I Love You Guys Foundation, Safe and Sound Schools, Partner Alliance for Safer Schools (PASS) and a 13-year-old student, to touch upon topics such as school shootings and how to best spend money budgeted for school safety.

Audience members were encouraged to give input and ask questions, creating an opportunity to hear what works for some and what areas need improvement.

CSC West was joined by more than 30 exhibitors this year, including Transact, Stanley Security, Sony and Genetec, to name a few. CSC’s goal is making campuses safer together, and our sponsor showcase gave ample opportunity for just that.

Attendee Frank Felix, from the Department of Public Safety at USC, said, “For a first timer, it’s been a wonderful conference with great lecturers, and I hope to come again.”
