Everbridge, a critical event management (CEM) software provider, has been selected by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as its new mass notification provider for its statewide emergency alerting program, COMMalert.

The program will be implemented in phases with additional capabilities added over time, according to the press release. The state contract also provides a purchasing vehicle for local municipalities and state universities to purchase their own critical event management solution.

State and local government organizations can use COMMalert to send important notifications through text, email, voice, mobile app, social media and more, according to mass.gov. Notifications can be sent to staff and stakeholders, including the public.

“Statewide emergency alerting systems like COMMalert are crucial to keeping people safe and businesses running when unexpected events occur,” said Everbridge CEO David Meredith. “Massachusetts has always made emergency readiness, response and communications a priority, and as such, we are delighted to partner with the Commonwealth on their public safety initiatives, especially around the ongoing challenges created by COVID-19.”

Other New England states also have statewide contracts with Everbridge, including Connecticut and Vermont. In Boston, the Everbridge network is used by the Boston Police Department, the Boston Public Health Commission and the Boston Fire Department, according to Yahoo Finance. The company’s CEM platform facilitates internal communications so these organizations can manage the millions of people that are present in downtown Boston and respond quickly to any emergency events.

Everbridge has previously provided its services for free to the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) and its organization of the annual Boston Marathon, enabling real-time emergency notification to its network of approximately 10,000 volunteers.

It also offered its services pro bono to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) to provide notifications to residents and families displaced by the 2018 Merrimack Valley gas explosions.
