York U. Sues Magazine Over Sexual Assault Article

TORONTO — York University is suing Toronto Life for libel after the publication ran an article characterizing the university as “a hunting ground for sexual predators.”

In the article, “Fortress York,” journalist Katherine Laidlaw detailed a series of recent sexual assaults on the campus. It also noted that although the university hired more security guards and installed more emergency phones, female students continued to be fearful of being assaulted, The Toronto Star reports.

Administrators have condemned the article, stating that the article “presents a wholly distorted picture of women’s safety on the campus of York University.” The university is pursuing legal action against both Laidlaw and the publication.
