RICHMOND, Va., The Virginia State Crime Commission recently released a report on school security, which recommended officials not punish lawbreakers with administrative penalties but instead let law enforcement handle the proceedings.
The study found that at some schools, colleges and universities, even serious offenses were handled by the campus administration rather than by the courts. It recommends that victims be advised they can take their allegations to prosecutors. The study also suggests schools report felonies to prosecutors.
The commission may also consider changes to state law that would allow for improved training, technical support and record keeping for campus law enforcement. Additionally, it recommended the General Assembly consider more than 50 changes to state laws that would improve the monitoring and punishment of sex offenders.
