Vegetarianism Can Mask Teen Eating Disorders

A report that now appears in The Journal of the American Dietetic Association says that adolescent and young adult vegetarians may be at increased risk for binge eating with loss of control, while former vegetarians may be at increased risk for extreme unhealthful weight-control behaviors.

Although the 15- to 23-year-olds who were surveyed experienced many health benefits from being vegetarians – they ate more fruits and vegetables and less fat, and were less likely to be overweight than individuals who eat meat – current vegetarians were more prone to binges. Additionally, those survey participants who had previously been vegetarians were more likely to abuse diet pills, abuse laxatives, purge by vomiting or engage in other dangerous weight-control tactics.
