Va. College Seeks to Add Police Force

HENRY COUNTY, Va. — The board of directors at Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) unanimously approved the creation of a five-member police force to improve security on campus.

Although PHCC officials hope to establish the police department by May, the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) and the state Department of Criminal Justice Services must approve it, Martinsville Bulletin reports.

If approved, the PHCC police department would include two sworn police officers and three security officers who already work for the college. The institution wants PHCC police to have positive interactions with the campus community, so the department will use methods such as mediating disputes to handle problems initially. Arrests will be made as a last resort.
