USC Library Evacuated as Assault Suspect Taken into Custody

The suspect evaded police for over an hour before his arrest.

Police took a man suspected of assaulting a University of Southern California student into custody Saturday after a brief standoff.

The incident began around 4 p.m. in the Doheny Library on campus when a male in his 30’s lured a female student into the basement of the library posing as a campus security officer.

The suspect then allegedly held the student against her will and attempted to assault her, according to the Los Angeles Times.

When the victim screamed, campus police officers responded and attempted to arrest the man, but the suspect escaped to another part of the library.

Additional officers, including Los Angeles police, were called to the scene and the library was evacuated.

Around 5:30 p.m., with dozens of officers and patrol vehicles on campus, the suspect was finally taken into custody.

The victim in the incident was unharmed.
