FRESNO, Calif. – A 17-year-old high school student was shot and killed by a police officer April 16. According to police, the student had struck the officer with a baseball bat in the head, prompting the officer to discharge his back-up weapon.
The incident occurred just before noon at Roosevelt High School. Police say the sophomore came up from behind the police officer and hit him in the head with a wooden baseball bat. Family members have identified the student as Jesus “Jesse” Carrizales.
Authorities believe Carrizales’ attack on the officer may have been a “suicide by cop.” The officer involved in the shooting, Junus Perry, has been stationed at Roosevelt High for three years and had no run-ins with the shooter. After the incident, the officer was taken to the hospital for treatment of head injuries and then released.
