The University of Ottawa announced Jan. 16 that it will extend the suspension of its men’s varsity hockey team through the 2015 – 2016 season in order to implement new measures that will provide student athletes with “better guidance.”
The team was suspended last year in connection with an incident in which two of the hockey team’s members were charged with sexually assaulting a female student at Lakehead University. The extension of the suspension comes a few days after a class action lawsuit was filed against the University of Ottawa and its president on behalf of the hockey team, the Canadian Press reports.
The two students changed with sexual assault are not part of the class action lawsuit. The suit seeks $6 million in damages, and claims the university has wrongly tarnished the reputations of the team’s players.
