University Police Plan to Increase Jurisdiction in Off-Campus Communities

COLLEGE PARK, MD.
Published: December 2, 2008

University police at the University of Maryland, College Park, are looking to expand their jurisdiction outside of the campus. The department has not determined the boundaries of the expansion, but neighboring areas and student housing projects are being considered.

Three new off-campus housing developments are planned to begin in January. Nearly 2,500 more students are expected to join the off-campus community by 2010.

Local police currently share a concurrent jurisdiction with several locations outside the campus. College Park is expected to add three additional full-time county police officers by the end of the year.
