University Police Building Condemned Due to Health Concerns

WINDSOR, Ontario, Canada — The University of Windsor’s campus police building was recently condemned, possibly in response to widespread respiratory problems among employees. The building contained mold, asbestos and lead paint.

The Ministry of Labor condemned the building on April 8, The Windsor Star reports. According to the financial secretary of CAW Local 195, Mike Dunning, university officials have been aware of the problem since April 2003 but failed to act.

University spokeswoman Holly Ward, however, claims that regular maintenance has been performed on the building and that the university acted quickly following the condemnation notice by moving the police force to another location within an hour.

According to Dunning, several employees were forced to use inhalers to cope with their respiratory problems.

The fate of the building will depend on the findings of an inspection performed by a contractor last weekend, according to Ward.
