University Parking Lot Shooting Prompts Security Upgrades

LANGSTON, Okla.
Published: August 16, 2009

Four people were shot during a Langston University welcome back party on campus on Aug. 16, the day before classes started. The injured were not students of the university.

According to university police, the shooting took place in a campus parking lot at the end of the party. Police are unsure what led to the incident, according to The LU Gazette, the school’s student newspaper.

The FBI is now handling the investigation.

This is the third LU campus shooting within a year, according to the student newspaper. A male student was accidently shot in the shoulder inside a campus apartment in November, and in February, another male student was shot following an argument.

Several students interviewed by The LU Gazette said they were concerned over the lack of campus safety at their university. However, university officials say they are working to improve security at all campus functions.

According to NewsOK, on Aug. 17, in response to the latest shooting, Langston University officials announced a 30-day moratorium on campus social events. Additionally, all students, faculty, staff and visitors will be required to be cleared through on-campus security checkpoints. The two 24-hour security checkpoints will be set-up within a month. Vehicles will also be subject to searches.
