NORWICH, Conn. — The William W. Backus Hospital was picketed on July 12 by members of the union representing security guards and other support staff. The union claims the hospital has failed to bargain in good faith toward a contract agreement.
The International Union, Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America started contract negotiations in January, but an agreement has not yet been reached, The Day reports. The hospital has recently brought in representatives from private security companies and may intend to contract out security services to a private firm, according to Jeno O’Reilly, president of the union.
Keith Fontaine, vice president of corporate communications at the hospital, said the security guards’ criticisms are unfounded. He said five more negotiating sessions are scheduled.
