Umpqua Community College is planning to request $6 million from the state to improve campus security and renovate the building where a school shooting occurred in October.

A college spokesman told the state’s Higher Education Coordinating Commission that $4.2 million was needed to redesign Snyder Hall, the site where a gunman opened fire on students, killing eight and injuring nine more.

Snyder Hall remains closed to students, and Umpqua Director of Grants Susan Taylor said the college is still grieving, according to orgegonlive.com.

The renovations won’t change the building’s layout much. The few changes include closing areas that were previously open breezeways and converting the room where the massacre occurred to a rock garden.

The additional $1.8 million will go toward new classroom door locks, better lighting in parking lots, new staff (including night time security officers) and two new employee positions to specialize in campus-wide recovery efforts and to design future emergency plans.
