UCLA Appeals Fatal Lab Fire Findings

LOS ANGELES
Published: June 8, 2009

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is appealing a state regulator’s findings relating to the death of a staff research assistant in a campus laboratory fire. The state found the university had serious workplace safety violations.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) determined that the victim was not properly trained and was not wearing protective clothing when an experiment with air-sensitive chemicals burst into flames, reported The Los Angeles Times.

However, UCLA officials say the school made the required changes and has paid the more than $31,000 in fines assessed by regulators.
