UC Davis Swears In New Police Chief

DAVIS, Calif. — The University of California, Davis (UC Davis) has appointed a new police chief to head its campus police department for at least one year. The previous chief, Annette Spicuzza, resigned this past Wednesday and had been on paid administrative leave since soon after the Nov. 18 pepper-spraying incident.

Matthew Carmichael has been acting chief since November, the Los Angeles Times reports. He has been sworn in for a year-long term. The university will be conducting a national search later for a long-term chief.

Earlier this month, a UC task force investigating the pepper-spraying incident found that Spicuzza was running a “dysfunctional” department.
