UC Berkeley Experiences Spike in Sexual Assaults

Published: February 11, 2013

BERKELEY, Calif. — Authorities at the University of California, Berkeley have seen an increase in the number of rapes around the campus.

University police say that there was a total of 39 rapes reported in 2012 — an increase of 19 compared to the number of rapes reported the previous year, East Bay News, an affiliate of ABC News, reports. Many of the incidents occurred off-campus at parties in surrounding areas. They involved drugs or alcohol, and someone that the victim knew.

School officials are unclear why there was such a huge spike in the reports of sexual assaults; however, they noted that more women perhaps are feeling more comfortable reporting the rapes to police and friends.
