BERKELEY, Calif. – Officials at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) are disputing claims that they broke the law when rehiring Police Chief Victoria Harrison, who retired with a $2.1 million payout.
According to the Contra Costa Times, Harrison was rehired into the same position of which she had retired, only to receive a higher salary. The Times added that administrators broke UC and federal rules by discussing the rehiring before Harrison had actually retired.
This situation comes on the heels of a recent UC scandal in which top executives received millions of dollars in perks and extra compensation without the knowledge of UC regents or the public. However, UC Berkeley officials maintain there was no foul play with the plan.
According to Harrison, 54, she did a payout, which results in her losing her health insurance, monthly pension and other benefits. Additionally, UC spokesman Paul Schwartz added that the retirement package was consistent with university policy.
