U. of Vermont Lab Fire Exposes 15 Firefighters to Chemicals

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Fifteen firefighters were possibly exposed to chemicals as they battled a fire May 28 at the University of Vermont’s geology laboratory.

According to an official, those who responded to the blaze complained of burning eyes and irritated skin, and had to be taken to Fletcher Allen Health Care. After they were treated and their symptoms went away, all of the firefighters were released from the hospital.

The fire, which started on May 28 at about 10 a.m. in Delehanty Hall, took about 20 minutes to douse and is currently being investigated. Delehanty Hall contained chemicals used by geology students to dissolve quartz.
