ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The family of a University of Rochester student who was stabbed to death at a fraternity party on the campus in January 2011, has filed a lawsuit against the university and the fraternity for $24 million.
Delores Forest and Jeffrey Bordeaux Sr. filed the civil lawsuit Tuesday in state Supreme Court as the parents of 20-year-old Jeffrey Bordeaux Jr. on behalf of his estate, Democrat and Chronicle reports. They claim that the school, its campus police and Delta Upsilon fraternity were negligent by not taking the appropriate steps that could have minimized the possibility for violence. The lawsuit also alleges that UR failed to confirm that underage drinking would not be permitted on campus.
Also named in the lawsuit is Daren Venable, 20, the UR student who fatally stabbed Bordeaux, who was found not guilty of second-degree murder on grounds of self-defense. The two got into a drunken brawl at the Jan. 15, 2011 party over a woman they’d dated, reports The-LEADER.com
The lawsuit seeks $6 million for each parent and $12 million for Bordeaux’s estate.
