GREELEY, Colo. – The reserve punter for the University of Northern Colorado’s football team was arrested Sept. 12 and charged with second-degree assault after being accused of stabbing the first-string punter.
Mitch Cozad, 21, was in competition with Rafael Mendoza, 21, to secure the starting position.
A university employee stated that Cozad stabbed Mendoza from behind in his right leg between the buttocks and his hamstring. The attack took place in a parking lot, according to Lt. Gary Kessler of the Evans Police Department.
Cozad was expelled from the college and evicted from his dormitory on the same day of his arrest, and was booked into Weld County Jail. He was freed Sept. 13 on a $30,000 bond.
Mendoza was treated for his injuries and released.
