CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Federal homeland security funds will pay for new surveillance cameras at the University of North Carolina’s Smith Center.

The 300,000 square-foot center, which is the home court for the school’s basketball team and holds more than 20,000 people, will receive $50,000 for security upgrades. Campus officials believe, however, that additional funds will be needed for the improvements.

In addition to the security upgrades, an earlier request for $48,500 for communication equipment, vehicle barriers, explosive mitigation materials, and chemical and biological detection equipment is also being considered for the Smith Center.
