U. Of Michigan Ends Lifetime Campus Ban Policy
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan has changed a policy that allowed its police to ban people from campus for life. Instead, the new policy, which goes into effect on July 1, allows people to be banned from campus for only a year.
After a year, the university’s police chief can decide whether a person will be allowed back onto the campus or barred from entering it for another year, the Detroit Free Press reports. The university met with the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan – which previously raised concerns about the lack of an independent appeals process at the university – when drafting the new policy.
The new policy will also let police opt to ban a person from a particular building, the entire Ann Arbor campus or all three of the university’s campuses. That person can appeal the decision by contacting the police chief and then the associate vice president for operations and facilities.
