Educators are seeing an increase in the number of homeless students around the country due to economic hardships and the increasing number of foreclosures.
In January, more than 1,300 students were reported homeless in Fairfax County, Va., one of the county’s wealthiest areas. Washington, D.C. has experienced twice as many homeless youths this academic year compared to the previous year. This new trend has transformed schools into a safety net for families.
The instability often affects reading and math skills of homeless children, many of which are forced to repeat a grade.
