Teen Opens Fire in ER at Washington Hospital

An 18-year-old man was apprehended by police after he opened fire in the emergency room of Sunnyside Community Hospital.

An 18-year-old man is facing first degree assault charges after he opened fire in the emergency room of Sunnyside Community Hospital on Dec. 28.

At 4 a.m., police were alerted by several community members that a man carrying a “long” gun was firing shots. By the time police reached the area, Leo C. Vergara had entered the emergency room at Sunnyside and fired a gunshot, Daily Sun News reports.

A hospital security officer was reportedly fighting with Vergara by the time the hospital called the police. The security officer was able to successfully disarm Vergara before police arrived.

The hospital was put on lockdown during the altercation and Vergara was apprehended shortly after being disarmed.
