Teen With PTSD Convicted of Attempted Murder

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A teen was convicted Monday of attempted murder in an attack on a girl outside Deerfield Beach Middle School in 2010.

Wayne Treacy claimed that he was not responsible for his violent attack of then-15-year-old Josie Lou Ratley because he had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) resulting from his brother’s suicide a few months prior, the Associated Press reports. Prosecution psychiatrists testified that Treacy clearly knew right from wrong, despite having PTSD.

Ratley suffered permanent brain injuries after Treacy kicked and stomped her with his steel-toed boots. Before the attack, the victim had taunted Treacy with texts about his dead brother.
