Study: Schools Lack Student Dating Violence Training

The majority of U.S. high schools lack training or guidelines for counselors in dealing with dating violence, according to a new study.

The study surveyed 550 high school counselors, and more than 81% said their school had no protocol for responding to a report of dating violence, HealthDay reports. Ninety percent said there had been no staff training in the previous two years regarding student victims of dating abuse, even though 61% said they had counseled victims of dating violence in those two years.

The reasons for this lack of training vary, and can include school administrators’ reluctance to get involved in romantic relationships, according to lead researcher Dr. Jagdish Khubchandani.
