In a surprise to researchers, parents and educators, new studies indicate that 43% of girls and 28% of boys said they committed an act of physical dating violence. Twenty three percent of boys reported committing at least one act of sexual violence, compared to 18% of girls.
Additionally, one in three of the students studied said they had been a victim of at least one of the many behaviors on the spectrum of dating violence, reports NBC News. Those behaviors range from name calling to sexual assault.
The researchers also claim that psychological violence is just as damaging as physical violence.
It should be noted that the researchers involved in the studies stressed that male-perpetrated violence is more likely to cause severe physical injuries, compared to acts perpetrated by females.
Family support was found to be very effective in decreasing all types of violence.
