BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Students, faculty and staff returned to the University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) after being evacuated on Nov. 5 following an incident of gunfire along the U.S. – Mexico border.
Classes and activities were cancelled over the weekend when a series of gun battles in Matamoros left 55 people dead, including three marines and a suspected drug cartel leader, according to CNN.
Campus police chief John Cardoza told CNN that media reports stating that buildings and cars on campus had been struck by stray bullets were untrue. He stressed that his department acted quickly with assistance from federal, state and local police.
UTB is only minutes from the international bridge crossings into Matamoros, Mexico.
