GREENWOOD COUNTY, S.C. – Fifteen students at Brewer Middle School who were pierced with small needles will have their blood tested for potential diseases.
According to spokeswoman Amy Anderson of District 50, students reported the incidents to school officials Nov. 1. She stated that students were pricked with lancets on the school’s campus and on a school bus.
A 12-year-old student, explained Anderson, brought a box of lancets to school, typically used by diabetics to check blood sugar levels. The lancets were passed out to two other students who then began poking others. The student’s grandfather is diabetic.
Anderson expressed that all students involved would receive disciplinary action.
Students who were poked will take blood tests to determine whether they were infected with hepatitis, HIV, Staph or MRSA.
